Unearth Ancient Texas

A Prehistoric RV Road Trip from DFW

Discover An Even Wilder Texas!

Have you ever wanted to take a trip back in time, to when dinosaurs roamed the land and seas covered parts of Texas? If your RV is calling your name, here’s an epic “prehistory-themed” route you can do from the Dallas-Fort Worth area. With the comfort and flexibility of an RV, you can explore fossil parks, dinosaur footprints, mammoth bones, and rock art — all while enjoying the open road. This trip is loosely inspired by the “Texas Prehistoric Road Trip” guide.

Check Out These Texas Fossil Hot Spots:

  • Mineral Wells Fossil Park

This is a gem right near Fort Worth. At this park, fossils (crinoids, brachiopods, sea urchins, etc.) from ~300 million years ago lie exposed — you don’t need fancy gear to find something interesting

  • Waco Mammoth National Monument

Take a trip back into the Ice Age and check out a herd of Fossilized Columbian Mammoths that were trapped by a flash flood! There's even a fossilized Sabre Tooth Cat!

  • Dinosaur Valley State Park

With a name like that you certainly expect something amazing, and this location near Glen Rose, TX delivers! Take a trip along the Paluxy River banks and see fossilized footprints where Dinosaurs once roamed!

  • Heritage Museum of the Texas Hill Country

Located just north of San Antonio, this museum features hundreds of dinosaur tracks embedded in limestone, plus local historical exhibits - which at this location you can enjoy with air conditioning!

  • Government Canyon State Natural Area

This location is also near San Antonio but offers far more adventure(and way less A/C). This is a perfect spot to get out in nature with family and friends for a glimpse of dinosaur tracks dating back ~110 million years!

  • Seminole Canyon State Park & Rock Art

This destination is definitely a little more of a road trip leading you to deep southwest Texas but it's well worth the drive. At this site you can view ancient pictographs dating back more than 4000 years ago!

  • Paint Rock (Ancient Pictograph Cliffs)

This location requires a little more planning, as it is on private land and tours must be booked in advance but don't let that scare you away. This location offers a powerful glimpse into human history in a more intimate setting.

Texas is a truly marvelous place with so much to see and enjoy, and an RV is the perfect way to slow down and really take it all in! We hope you enjoyed learning about these incredible destinations, and maybe even added one of these to your future adventures list.
